Townsville

Townsville is the second largest town in Queensland with a population of 150,000. It’s currently hosting the Rugby League World Cup (they’re really only going through the motions, since Australia have won it seven times in a row!). We’re staying at the Beach House Motel on The Strand (shades of Roxy Music), which is basically the promenade. We can see Magnetic Island out in the bay (so called [this is another Captain Cook reference, Pete] because it screwed up Captain Cook’s compass readings). The motel is unremarkable but is very well situated and it does have wireless broadband! So I’m taking the opportunity to download a few more photographs.

I didn’t mention last time that Lake Eacham, near where we stayed for the last three nights was great for swimming in (despite being 65 metres deep!), so I’ve included a picture to show you.

It’s very hot here – about 32 degrees – and quite humid but there’s a nice sea breeze to cool us down. We’re off to Airlie Beach tomorrow.

Sounds like you are having a great time. It's not quite 32 degrees here - sometimes around 35-40 but I'm not sure we're using the same scale! photos of the birds are good. Is that you in the canoe? Do they sell razors in Australia!?
I heard the Obama speech in London (been working there for a few days). I'm really pleased that he got in. Enjoy you last couple of weeks of warmth.
