New York, New York

Landed at JFK at around 4.30 pm local after a fairly pleasant Virgin flight. Watched a couple of films - Bad Lieutenant (very "noir" - a bit like a James Elroy novel set in New Orleans with Nicholas Cage as a totally corrupt cop) and Guy Ritchie's version of Sherlock Holmes (total hokum). It passes the time!

Got through immigration and baggage claim fairly quickly (despite the electronic fingerprinting and digital photographs). Opted for a slightly more expensive unofficial cab (to escape the queues or "standing in line" as it's known here). This was driven by a large black guy who it soon transpired thought he was competing in Formula 1. When confronted by any kind of traffic jam he weaved lanes, charged at narrow spaces with his horn blaring and generally muscled his way through. When he was unavoidably stationary at traffic lights he started surfing the internet on his I-Phone! However, we got to our hotel very quickly!

I've just discovered a showing of the World Cup semi-final between Germany and Spain on ESPN Classic. Obviously a recording because it was played about 4 hours ago but I don't know the result so bye for now!
