New Jersey

On our last day in New York we spent the morning strolling through Central Park and then visited Grand Central Station (the biggest station in the world).  In the afternoon Sue went to Macy's and Gap whilst I sat outside and read the Wall Street Journal!  We walked up to Times Square in the evening.

Today we picked up our car.  We walked from our hotel on W40th Street to the Hertz garage on W43th Street.  Our car is a Toyota Camry - roughly equivalent to an Avensis in the UK.  We would class it as a large car but in the USA it's "mid-size".  We then drove through the Lincoln Tunnel on to the New Jersey Turnpike.  Our first port of call was Asbury Park.  This is a small seaside town but it's claim to fame in the world of rock music is that it hosted Springsteen's early gigs and gave him the title for his debut album "Greetings From Asbury Park".  We had a walk along the boardwalk and inspected the plaque dedicated to the "Sound of Asbury Park".

We then drove on to Atlantic City.  Once again, this place pops up in Springsteen and Dylan songs.  It was the setting for Louis Malle's classic film "Atlantic City" and hosts a number of scenes in "The Sopranos".  The boardwalk here was the first in the world.  We ate at "Megan's" on the boardwalk and drank Sam Adam's summer ale.

Tomorrow we're off to Philadelphia.
