Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is perched on a hill about 6 miles from the coast. William Randolph’s father bought 300 square miles of land by the coast in the 1850s, just after the US purchased California from Mexico, and the Hearst Corporation still owns most of it. The “castle” was built in stages from 1919 to 1947 and is another example of too much money and not enough taste. It is a bizarre collection of styles. The main house was built to resemble a 16th Century Spanish church; below it is a swimming pool surrounded by Greco-Roman statues; inside is what resembles a medieval banqueting hall! Hearst used it to entertain film stars and other business moguls.

Our hotel is just five miles along the coast on Moonstone Beach. A lovely location with a boardwalk along the beach.
