Moab to Panguitch and Bryce Canyon

Yesterday we drove to Panguitch the "pretty way", about 280 miles, much of it on twisting roads.  Although the driving was a bit tiring, it was well worth it for the vistas.  It seems that most of Utah consists of towering cliffs, canyons and mountainous terrain.  There's no wonder it appealed to the Mormons in the late 19th Century, looking for an isolated area where they could practise their religion without let or hindrance.

Eventually we arrived in Panguitch, the sort of place we're becoming used to - a main street lined with a few houses, motels and the odd diner.  A lot of the diners in Utah seem to be teetotal.  Apparently until recently you had to join a club to get a drink, free-standing bars were not allowed.

Today we visited Bryce Canyon.  This is not really a canyon but a succession of "amphitheatres" filled with sand coloured limestone fins and towers (or "hoodoos") created by the erosion processes of  ice and water.  Everywhere you look there more and more fantastic sights.  You become almost numbed as you take in one sight after another.  It seems that every national park we enter surpasses the previous one.

Tomorrow we visit Zion National Park and then we're going to Las Vegas.  I suspect natural phenomena will be replaced by another kind.

Hello again, just like me to get it wrong about Utah, after being ripped off you needed to pan for gold. Load of convicts aren't they must be the ancestors of Butch Cassidy. Beautiful scenery, does not seem real must be awesome to see. Hope the rest of your trip passes without anymore hitches.

Lots of Love
